The beginning of the month found me at the zoo (again!) and at Miller Park (again!) I was invited with Jim's family for his mom's company picnic at the zoo and like hell I'd say no to all-you-can-eat roasted corn, popcorn, and ice cream!!! It was glorious. (Did I mention there was free booze too? Oh yeah).
Ruth the elephant was the stand-out animal of the evening.
Some company was giving away free tickets to see the Brewers when they were playing the Cubs. The seats were WAY up high, but Miller Park stadium pretty much rocks in that even the nosebleed seats are pretty good. The game itself was a little lame though. All the points were scored in the first inning - the rest were big fat 0s. Ugh. So rather than sit around hoping for something to happen, we went in search of the elusive and fabled "vegetarian hot dog" It took approximately 20 minutes to find the one stand that had it, but we found it! Not only is the veggie dog almost $2 cheaper than other dogs, it's also cooked to order so you aren't getting a drawer hot dog, and it tastes the same as the others (if you load it up with condiments). For trying to live on a budget, I will suck it up and eat the veggie dog!
Mid month was the WI State Fair which I attended with Adam (just like last year) Unfortunately our 2nd annual fair trip was on a day it poured. It was raining pigs and chickens! Despite the soggy weather, we made sure to eat our way through. I tried my first ever cream puff (the WI state desert and why gastric bypass was ever invented). Really, it wasn't anything special, but I feel like I've now been officially christened as a Wisconsinite. Other food challenges included the cheese curds, deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, and the Krispy Kreme chocolate covered bacon cheeseburger (thanks to Adam). I took one bite. One was enough. I would say it was the biggest let down of the day, but the pig races were canceled due to the rain and I was pretty bummed about that :( What's a girl have to do to see some racing swine in this state?
We had to split this thing it's so huge. And at $4 it's kinda pricey for being mostly whipped cream...
This last weekend of August I went back to Michigan to visit friends and finally book some stuff for the New Zealand trip with Meg. Our official reservations include a bicycle wine tour (aka legal drunk cycling), kayaking in Milford Sound (if you don't know what that is, please google it now. It's a treat for your eyes!), and bungy jumping!!! Tentatively we're still hoping to take surf lessons, but that will depend on the weather conditions when we arrive. I'm starting to get excited!!!! Although I spent a lot of time with Meg, I somehow avoided taking a picture of us....but we had a blast. We found ourselves out on the town Sat night where we met some new friends and tried more beer than my stomach is used to...I guess that means I'm not really a true Wisconsinite despite the cream puff. One step forward, two steps back. :)
Driving.....driving....driving....driving..... at least the roads are clear at 3am!
Chilling with my new friend Steve next to Rosa. In hindsight, this photo may be a little insensitive....2 white people taking a seat while Ms. Rosa statue stands.....hrmmm.
I of course had my usual visit to Nick and Geo. We ended up going down to Holland (because it's one of my most favorite places) and to see the beach (cause Milwaukee's Lake MI is UUUUUUGLY) Where we ended up trying to get to the beach at turned out to be quite the hike to get there. It was very impromptu, but it was such a lovely day we though 'why not'.
And here I thought Geo was a pure Husky..... photographic evidence begs to differ.
And of course I visited my brother too! But again, no picture. I'm so proud of him and his motivation to get in shape!!! Keep it up! But I think he should come visit Milwaukee next (cough cough hint hint Erich!!!) Even if he can't though, hopefully it won't be 6 more months before I get back there again.
That about wraps up this month. In case you haven't heard (in which you haven't been adequately facebook stalking me) I'll be getting laser eye surgery mid-Sept!!! Good buy bank account Hello to a life sans contacts!Worth it! Yipee!!!!!!
